File Server Info

I want to setup a reliable file server. This means I need to setup some raid arrays, etc.

RAID Info:

Goals

  1. reliable
  2. inexpensive
  3. minimize electricity usage
  4. easy to maintain

Hardware Specs

haze

  • 1 x 160 GB
  • 1 x 100 GB (oldest large drive)

wspace

  • 2 x 250 GB (one is an lvm, one is in two partitions of 150 GB and 85 GB)

  • 1 x 120 GB

other

  • 1 x 250 GB (broken external WD case)
  • 1 x 100 GB ? (drew's old hard drive)
  • 2 x 80 GB

So I have 9 hard drives, 2 pairs, one triplet, and 2 oddballs…

  • 2 x 100 GB (but one drive is very old)

5 drive

  • 2 x 250 GB
  • 1 x 250 GB (in 150 GB and 100 GB partitions) mirrored with 1 x 100 GB and 1 x 160 GB ?
  • Total = 500 GB (but over 5 drives)

6 drive

  • 2 x 250 GB
  • 1 x 250 GB, 1 x 160 GB (160 GB usable)
  • 2 x 100 GB
  • Total = 510 GB

8 drive

  • 2 x 250 GB
  • 1 x 250 GB, 1 x 160 GB (160 GB usable)
  • 2 x 100 GB
  • 2 x 80 GB
  • Total = 590 GB
